Have you ever heard of the lines and figures of Nazca in Peru?
ペルーにある、ナスカの地上絵について聞いたことがありますか？
They are very large lines and pictures of animals drawn on the ground.
それらは、地上に描かれた巨大な線や動物の絵のことです。
They are over 1,500 years old, but people only discovered them after planes began to fly over the region.
それらは1500年以上も前に描かれましたが、飛行機がその地域の上空を飛び始めるようになって発見されました。
That is because the pictures are too large to see the whole picture of the images from the ground.
それらはあまりにも巨大すぎて、地上からは全体像を見ることができないからです。
Many people still wonder why such large drawings were made.
多くの人々が今でもなぜそのような大きな絵が作られたのか、不思議に思っています。

One German woman, Maria Reiche, studied the lines and drawings for years.
あるドイツ人女性のマリアライへは、長年にわたり地上絵について研究していました。
She believed that each figure was a symbol of the stars.
彼女は、おのおのの形は星を意味すると信じていました。
She thought all the figures together were a kind of calendar.
彼女は、すべての絵を合わせると、一種の暦になると思いました。
Maria studied the mystery of Nazca for more than 50 years.
マリアは50年以上、ナスカの謎について研究しました。
However, she only started her study by chance.
しかしながら、彼女が研究を始めたのは、ただの偶然だったのです。
