Part1｜【CROWN１ Reading ２の和訳】
It was 20 years ago and I was living in Paris.
それは20年前のことで、当時私はパリに住んでいた。
I was earning just enough money to live.
私にはやっと生活できるだけの収入があった。
She had read a book of mine and had written to me about it.
そのご婦人は私の本を読んでその本について手紙をくれた。
I answered, thanking her, and then I received from her another letter saying she would like to see me; but the only free moment she had was on Thursday.
私は彼女のことを思いながら返事を書いた。するとまた彼女から手紙がきて、私に会いたいと書いてあった。しかし、彼女の自由な時間は木曜日だけだった。
She asked if I would take her to a little luncheon at Foyot’s.
彼女はフォワイヨへ軽い昼食に連れて行ってくれないかとたずねてきた。
Foyot’s was such an expensive restaurant that I had never even thought of going there.
フォワイヨは私がそれまで行こうと考えたことさえ一度もないほど高級なレストランだ。
But I was flattered and I couldn’t say no to a woman.
しかし、おだてられて、私はいやとは言えなかった。
I had 80 francs to last me the rest of the month and a luncheon should not be more than 15.
月末までは手持ちの80フランで間に合うし、昼食は15フランを超えないはずだ。
Part2｜【CROWN１ Reading ２の和訳】
I answered that I would meet her at Foyot’s on Thursday at half past twelve.
私は木曜日の12時半にフォワイヨで会うと返事を出した。
She was not young or pretty but she liked to talk.
彼女は若くも美しくもなかったが、話し好きだった。
Since she was talking about me, I was happy to listen.
彼女の話題は私のことだから、私はよろこんで聞いた。
I was surprised when the menu was brought, for the prices were very high.
メニューが運ばれて来て私は驚いた。 それというのも値段がとても高かったからだ。**
“I never eat anything for luncheon,” she said.
「昼食はいつもいただきませんの」と彼女は言った。
“Oh, don’t say that!” I answered.
「まあ、そうおっしゃらずに」と私は答えた。
“I never eat more than one thing. I wonder if they have any salmon. “
「いただくとしてもいつも1品だけなんです。 こちらに鮭はおいてあるかしら？」
Well, it was early in the year for salmon, but I asked the waiter if there was any.
まあ、鮭の季節にはまだ早かったが、給仕に鮭があるかたずねた。
Part3｜【CROWN１ Reading ２の和訳】
Yes, a beautiful salmon had just come in.
ええ、上等のが1匹ちょうど届いたところです。
I ordered it for her.
私は彼女のためにそれを注文した The waiter asked her if she would have something else.
**給仕は彼女に他に注文はないか聞いた。
“No,” she answered, “I never eat more than one thing. Unless you have a little caviar.”
「ないわ」と彼女は答えて、「いただくとしてもいつも1品だけですのよ。でもあなたがキャビアを少し召し上がらないのなら。」
I knew I could not afford caviar, but I could not very well tell her that.
キャビアを頼める余裕がないのはわかっていたが、私にはとても言えなかった。
I told the waiter to bring caviar.
私は給仕にキャビアを持ってくるよう頼んだ。
For myself I chose the cheapest dish on the menu and that was a mutton chop.
私には、メニューの中で一番安い料理を選ぶとすれば、それは骨付きの羊肉だった。
“I think it’s not a good idea to eat meat,” she said.”I don’t know how you can work after eating heavy things like chops.”
「肉料理はよくないですわ」と彼女は言った。「骨付き肉のようなお腹にたまるものを食べたらお仕事に障りますもの
Then there was the question of drink. 今度は飲み物の注文を聞かれた。
“I never drink anything for luncheon,” she said.
「昼食に飲み物はいつもいただかないから」と彼女は言った。
“I don’t, either,” I answered.
「私もだ」と私は答えた。
“Except white wine,” she said. “These French white wines are wonderful.”
「白ワインは別だけれど」と彼女は言った。「ここのフランスワインはすばらしいわ」
“What would you like?” I asked.
「どのワインがいいですか？」と私は聞いた。
“My doctor won’t let me drink anything but champagne.”
「お医者様がシャンペン以外はだめですって」 I turned pale.
私は青くなった。
I ordered half a bottle. 私はハーフボトルを注文した。
I mentioned that my doctor told me not to drink champagne.
私は医者にシャンペンをのまないように言われていることを伝えた。
“What are you going to drink, then?”
「では、何をお飲みになりますの？」 “Water.”
「水を」 She ate the caviar and the salmon.
彼女はキャビアとサーモンを食べた。
She talked about art and literature and music.
彼女は美術、文学、音楽について話した。
But I wondered what the bill would come to.
しかし、ここの勘定がいくらになるのかとあれこれ考えていた。
When my mutton chop arrived she said, “I see luncheon.Why don’t you follow my example and just eat one thing?”
私の骨付き羊肉が運ばれてくると彼女は言った。「お食事なさるのね。私のように1品だけにしたらどうですか」 “I am only going to eat one thing,” I said as the waiter came again with the menu.
「これから1品食べるところですよ」と私は言った。ちょうど給仕がメニューを持って戻って来たところだった。
Part４｜【CROWN１ Reading ２の和訳】
She waved him aside.
彼女は彼を振り払った。
“No, no, I never eat anything for luncheon.
「もう結構。昼食はいつも何もいただきませんから」 Just a bite.
食べてもほんの少しだけですの。
I couldn’t possibly eat anything more―except some giant asparagus.
とてもこれ以上は食べられませんし―でもジャイアントアスパラガスなら。
My heart sank.
わたしは憂鬱になった。
I knew that they were expensive.
それが高価なことは分かっていた。
“Madame wants to know if you have any giant asparagus,” I asked the waiter. 「ご婦人はジャイアントアスパラガスがあるかお知りになりたいのだが」と私は給仕にたずねた。
He smiled a happy smile, and said that they had some very large ones.
給仕はうれしそうに笑って、とても大きいのがあると言った。
“I’m not in the least hungry,” my guest said, “but if you insist I don’t mind having some asparagus.”
「お腹はぜんぜんすいていませんの」と私のお客さんは言って「でもどうしてもとおっしゃるなら少しいただいてもかまいませんわ。
I ordered them.
わたしはそれを注文しました。
“Aren’t you going to have any?”
「あなたは召し上がらないのですか？」 “No, I never eat asparagus.”
「ええ、私はアスパラガスを食べませんので」 We waited for the asparagus.
私たちはアスパラガスを待った。
I was in a panic.
私は動揺していた。
It was not a question now how much money I should have left for the rest of the month.
今となっては今月あといくら必要かは問題ではなかった。
I wasn’t sure if I had enough to pay the bill.
勘定が払える金があるか定かではなかった。
The asparagus appeared.
アスパラガスが運ばれてきた。
They looked really good.
それは実においしそうだった。
I watched the woman eat them.
私は彼女がそれを食べるのをじっと見ていた。
Part５｜【CROWN１ Reading ２の和訳】
“Coffee?” I said.
「コーヒーはいかがですか？」と私は言った。
“Yes, just an ice cream and coffee,” she answered.
「そうですね、アイスクリームとコーヒーだけ」と彼女は答えた。
I was past caring now, so I ordered coffee for myself and an ice cream and coffee for her.
もう心配を通り越して気にならなくなったので、自分にはコーヒーを、彼女にはアイスクリームとコーヒーを注文した。
“You know, there’s one thing I believe in,” she said, as she ate the ice cream.
「あの、私には1つ信条としていることがあるんです」と彼女はアイスクリームを食べながら言った。
“One should always get up from a meal feeling one could eat a little more.”
「いつもあともう少し食べられそうなところで食事を終えるということです」 “Are you still hungry?” I asked.
**「まだお腹がすいているんですか？」と私はたずねた。
“Oh, no, I’m not hungry. I was speaking for you.”
「ああ、そうじゃありません。お腹はが空いていません。あなたのことを言っているんです」 “Oh, I see.”
「ああ、そうですか」 The bill came and when I paid it I found that I had only enough for a three-franc tip.
勘定が来て支払うと私の手元には3フランのチップがやっと払えるだけの金しか残らなかった。
She looked at the three francs I left for the waiter and I knew that she thought me mean.
彼女は私が給仕に置いていったその3フランを見ていたから、私がケチだと思ったに違いない。
But when I walked out of the restaurant I had the whole month before me and not a franc in my pocket.
そうであっても、レストランを出た時、私にあったのはこれから過ごす丸1か月と空っぽのポケットだった。
“Never eat more than one thing for luncheon,” she said as we shook hands.
「昼食には決して1品以上食べないことですわ」と握手しながら彼女は言った。
“I’ll do better than that,” I answered, “I’ll eat nothing for dinner tonight.” 「それよりもっとうまくやりますよ」と私は答えて、「今晩は何も食べないつもりです」と言った。
“You’re quite a humorist!” she cried brightly, jumping into a taxi.
「あなたは本当にユーモアのある方ね！」彼女は大きな声で快活に言って、タクシーに飛び乗った。
