This photograph was taken by an American photojournalist, Joe O’Donnell, in Nagasaki in 1945.
この写真は1945年長崎でアメリカの写真ジャーナリスト、ジョー・オダネルさんによって撮影されました。

“I saw a boy about 10 years old walking by.
私はそばを通り過ぎる10歳くらいの少年を見ました。
He was carrying a baby on his back.
少年は赤ん坊を背負っていました。
In those days in Japan, we often saw children playing with their little brothers or sisters on their backs, but this boy was clearly different.
当時日本では、幼い弟や妹を背負って遊んでいる子供をよく見かけましたが、この少年ははっきりと違っていました。
I could see that he had come to this place for a serious reason.
少年は何か深刻な理由でこの場所に来ていることが分かりました。
He was wearing no shoes.
彼は靴を履いていませんでした。
His face was hard.
彼の顔は強張っていました。

The little head was tipped back as if the baby were fast asleep.
赤ん坊はぐっすりねているかのようにその小さな頭を後ろにそらせていました。
“The boy stood there for 5 or 10 minutes.
少年はそこに5～10分立っていました。
The men in white masks walked over to him and quietly began to take off the rope that was holding the baby.
白いマスクをつけた男たちが少年に歩み寄ると静かに赤ん坊を結わいていたひもをはずし始めました。
That is when I saw that the baby was already dead.
私が赤ん坊がすでに死んでいることを知ったのはその時です。
The men held the body by the hands and feet and placed it on the fire.
男たちは死んだ赤ん坊の手と足をつかんでその遺体を火にかけました。

“The boy stood there straight without moving, watching the flames.
その少年は身動きもせずそこにまっすぐ立って、炎を見ていました。
He was biting his lower lip so hard that it shone with blood.
彼の下唇は、とても強くかんでいたために血で光っていました。
The flame burned low like the sun going down.
炎は沈む太陽のように小さくなりました。
The boy turned around and walked silently away.”
少年は振り返って静かに立ち去りました。
