Now let’s take a look at this picture.
ではこの写真をご覧ください。
I’m sure some of you have seen it before.
ご覧になったことのある方もいると思います。
It was taken at the time of the Vietnam War in 1972.
1972年、ベトナム戦争中に撮影されました。
Here a young girl, Kim Phuc, is running down a road in pain, with her clothes burned off.
これは幼い少女のキム・フックさんが服を焼かれ、苦しんで道路を走ってくるところです。
This is what she once said about the experience:
この体験についてかつて彼女はこのように語っています。

“I didn’t hear anything, but I saw the fire around me.
何も聞こえませんでしたが、火に囲まれていました。
And suddenly my clothes were gone because of the fire.
それで、その炎で突然服が燃えてなくなりました。
And I saw the fire over my body, especially my arm.
それから炎が私の体を覆いました。特に腕がひどかったです。
But my feet weren’t burned. I was crying, and I was running out of the fire.
でも、足はやけどしませんでした。私は泣いて、火から逃げ出しました。
I kept running and running and running.
走って、走って、走り続けました

“I was in the hospital. Fourteen months.
入院しました。14ヶ月。
I went through 17 operations to repair the burns over half my body.
体の半分を覆うやけどを治療するために17回の手術を受けました。
And that thing changed my life.
このことが私の人生を変えました。
It made me think about how I could help people.
どうやって人を助けられるかを考えるようになりました。

“When my parents first showed me the picture from the newspaper, I couldn’t believe that it was me, because it was so terrible.
両親が最初に新聞の写真を見せてくれた時、それが自分だとは信じられませんでした。だってとてもひどい姿だったからです。
I want everybody to see that picture, because in that picture people can see what war is.
私はすべての人にこの写真を見てもらいたいです。なぜならこの写真には戦争の何たるかを見ることができるからです。
It’s terrible for the children.
戦争は子どもにとって悲惨なものです
You can see everything in my face.”

I want people to learn from it.
みなさんにこの写真を見て知ってほしいのです」
