Food banks collect surplus food from companies, supermarkets, and farmers and give it to welfare organizations that serve people who need help.
フードバンクは企業やスーパーマーケット、農家から余った食べ物を集めて、助けを必要としている人を支援する福祉団体に渡す。
Charles E. McJilton started the first food bank in Japan, Second Harvest Japan (2HJ).

In 1991 I was a university exchange student living in a part of Tokyo where there were many day laborers.
1991年、私は大学の交換留学生で、日雇い労働者がたくさんいる東京のある地区に住んでいました。
They looked for work day by day, but when the economy went down, they could not find jobs.
彼らは毎日仕事を探していましたが、景気が悪くなって仕事を見つけられませんでした。
I often saw them sleeping on the streets.
私は彼らが道で寝ているのをよく見かけました。
Their lives were not easy.
彼らの生活は楽ではありませんでした。
Many men became alcoholics.
多くの男性がアルコール依存症になりました。
I could understand them because I became an alcoholic in high school.

Stopping drinking is not easy, but people can change their lives; it is never too late.

Several years later, I decided to make a self-help center.
それから数年後、自立支援センターの設立を決心しました。
Without the right “tools” (an address, a phone number, a place to store things and take a bath), it is hard to get off the streets.
きちんとした「道具(ツール)」（住所、電話番号、物を収納し、入浴できる場所）がなければ、路上生活から脱することは難しいです。
This center would give people the “tools” to help themselves.
このセンターは自立するための「道具(ツール)」を与えます。
However, by 1997 I had found that there was something missing inside of me.
しかし、1997年になるころには、私の中で何かが欠けていることに気づきました。
I had a lot of “head knowledge” about homelessness, but lacked “heart knowledge. ”
私にはホームレスであることについての「頭の知識」はたくさんありましたが、「心の知識」が欠けていました。
