From January 1997 until April 1998, I lived along the Sumida River in a cardboard house.

To my surprise, my neighbors did not lose hope.

They helped me in many different ways.

Many did some kind of work, such as collecting cans.

I kept working in a Japanese company without telling my co-workers where I lived.
わたしは同僚にどこに住んでいるかを告げずに日本企業で働き続けました。
Every day I could see that people are people; it doesn’t matter if they work in a company or live on the streets.
毎日、人は人であるという事実を目のあたりにしました。会社で働こうと路上に住もうと関係ないのです。

Fifteen percent of Japanese people live in poverty.

At least 780,000 people in Japan do not have enough safe, nutritious food each day.

I remember a time when we received a call from a single mother who had two small children.
2人の子供がいるシングルマザーからの電話を受けた時のことは忘れられません。
That day she had to ask the older child to give up a meal so that the smaller one could eat.
その日お母さんは下の子が食べられるように上の子にご飯を我慢するよう言わなくてはならなかったのです。
Such things happen every day, even in Japan.
日本でさえもこんなことが毎日起きています。
