The first food bank started in the U. S. in 1967.
アメリカでは最初のフードバンクは1967年に始まりました。
In Japan, we started our activities in 2000 and became an NPO called Second Harvest Japan in March 2002.
日本では、私たちが2000年に活動を始め、2002年にセカンドハーベスト・ジャパンという非営利団体（NPO）になりました。
Our name comes from the idea of “harvesting” surplus food.
この団体名は余った食べ物を「収穫すること」という理念から生まれました。

We not only give food to people who need it, but we also help companies save money.
私たちは食物を必要としている人に食物を与えるだけでなく、企業の経費節減も手伝います。
In 2010, we “harvested” over 500 million yen worth of food.
2010年には5億円相当の食べ物を「収穫しました」。
Companies saved 80 million yen because they did not have to dispose of the food that they could not sell.
企業は売ることのできない食品の廃棄処理をする必要がなくなり8千万円が節約できました。

Trust is very important in our work.

When you have trust, food and financial support naturally follow.

We think of them as equal partners.
企業は対等な仲間だと考えています。
We tell them about our activities and ask them, “Is there anything we can do together?”

NPOs are still new in Japan.
日本ではNPOがまだ新しい存在です。
As NPOs grow and become more professional, people will see that they can play a bigger role in society.
NPOがもっと発展し、本格的な組織になるにつれ、社会の中でもっと大きな役割を果たすことができると思われるようになるでしょう。
Just wanting to do something good is not enough.
何か善いことをしたいというだけでは十分ではありません。
The important thing is how you run your NPO.
大切なことは自分のNPOをどのように運営するかということです。
Second Harvest Japan is unique because we deal with both business and welfare.
セカンドハーベスト・ジャパンは商売(ビジネス)と福祉の両方をに取り組む他に類のない組織です。
