Slow Foodということばを聞いたことがあるでしょう。では、Slow Readingはどうですか？インターネット時代に生きる私たちにとって、紙に印刷された文字を読むことの意味とは、どんなことでしょう。

Recently I read that the average Internet reader spends 10 seconds or less on a Web page.
最近、インターネットの閲覧者が1つのウェブぺージの閲覧にかける時間が10秒以下という記事を読みました。
Researchers, using cameras to trace eye movement across Web pages, found that most people read in an “F” shape.
研究者がカメラを使ってウェブぺージを見る目の動きを追うと、ほとんどの人が「Ｆの字」の形に読むことが分かりました。
They read the first line and skip down a bit and skim a bit more.
1行目を読んでから少し飛ばし、それからまたもう少し飛ばします。
When a researcher was asked, “How do users read on the Web?” he answered, “They don’t.”
「インターネット利用者はどのようにウェブ上の記事を読むのですか？」と研究者に質問すると、「読んでいません」と答えました。

So I have joined the Slow Reading Movement.
そこで私は、「スロー・リーディング運動」に参加しました。
This is a group of people who want to relearn the art of reading for pleasure and discovery.
これは楽しみや発見のための読書術を学びなおす人の集まりです。
Slow readers limit computer use, read aloud, memorize poetry, and try to break the habit of superficial reading.
スローリーダーはコンピュータの使用を制限し、音読し、詩を暗記し、浅く読む習慣を止めるようにします。

We have decided―we slow readers―that we will no longer be slaves to the Internet.
私たち―私たちスローリーダー―はインターネットの奴隷にはもはやならないと決心しました。
Here are my Slow Reading Resolutions:
以下はスローリーディングの抱負です。
- I will no longer be chained to my computer. One day a week I will turn it off and leave it off all day.
もうパソコンには縛られない。一週間に1度、1日中電源を切ったままにする。 - I will not be a slave to e-mail or SNS.
電子メールやSNSの奴隷にならない。 - I will memorize 10 lines of poetry every week. Memorization forces me to read slowly and carefully.
毎週詩を10行暗記する。暗記するにはもっとゆっくり、じっくり読まざるを得ないから。 - I will read aloud, slowing down and concentrating on every word. If I can’t find anyone to read to, I’ll try audio books. I can listen and follow along on the printed page.
音読をする。読む速度を落とし、一語一語に集中して。聞かせる相手が見つけられなければ、オーディオブックを使ってみる。聞いてから印刷されたページに従って音読する。
