On the morning of December 7, 2009, a big stone statue called Moyai was stolen.
2009年12月7日の朝、モヤイ像と呼ばれる大きな石の像が盗まれました。
The statue had been just to the south of Shibuya Station, one of Tokyo’s busiest places.
その像は、東京で最もにぎやかな場所のひとつである、渋谷駅のすぐ南側にありました。
There was a letter which said, “I took the Moyai! Lupin Ⅲ.”
そこには、「モヤイ像はいただいた！ルパン三世」という手紙が残されていました。

In fact, Lupin Ⅲ told the media a week before that he would steal the statue.
実はルパン三世は、像を盗むことを報道機関に1週間前に知らせていました。
First, he asked people on a website, “What would you like Lupin Ⅲ to steal?”
最初に彼は、ウェブサイトで人々に「あなたはルパン三世に何を盗んで欲しいですか？」とたずねました。
Most people chose the Moyai in Shibuya, so Lupin Ⅲ really stole it.
ほとんどの人々が渋谷のモヤイ像を選んだので、ルパン三世は本当にそれを盗みました。
The Moyai was gone!
モヤイ像は消えてしまった！

Actually, this was all part of a large scale project called “Lupin Steals Japan Project.”
実は、これはすべて、「ルパンスティールジャパンプロジェクト」と呼ばれる、大規模なプロジェクトの一環でした。
The aim of the project was to make up interesting news to cheer up people in Japan.
このプロジェクトの目的は、日本の人々を元気づけるために、おもしろいニュースを作り出したものでした。

Most people understood it was only a joke and enjoyed the event.
ほとんどの人々は、それはただの冗談だと理解し、イベントを楽しんだ。
However, this kind of media joke can sometimes be both fun and a problem.
しかし、このような報道機関による冗談は時に、楽しみと同時に問題となることがあります。
