Message for High School Students
高校生へのメッセージ
ジェーン・グドール博士からメッセージが届きました。少女時代から現在に至るまで、決してぶれることなく歩んでいる博士を支えてきたのは、だれの、どんなことばだったのでしょう。
第１段落｜【CROWN１ Lesson６の和訳：Optional Reading】
When I was young, growing up in England, I dreamed of going to Africa and writing books about the wild animals who lived there.
イギリスで子供時代を過ごした私は、アフリカに行って、そこに生息する野生動物の本を書くことを夢見ていました。
Almost everyone laughed at me: after all, my family had very little money (we could not even afford a bicycle, certainly not a car); Africa seemed very far away; and I was a GIRL―in those days girls did not do things like that.
ほとんどの人が私をばかにしました。だって、私の家にはお金がほとんどなかったのですから（車はもちろん、自転車さえも持てなかったんです）。*アフリカはとても遠くに思えました。それに私は「女の子」でしたから－当時女の子はそんなことをしませんでした。
But my mother never laughed at me.
でも、私の母は決して私をばかにしませんでした。
She would tell me: “If you really want something and you work really hard and you take advantage of opportunities and you never give up, you will find a way.”
母はよくこう言いったものです。「もし、本当に何かが欲しくて、すごく頑張って、チャンスを生かして、決してあきらめなかったら、きっと道が開けるわ」

You may not immediately make your dream come true.
夢はすぐに叶わないこともあります。
We could not afford for me to go to university (and there were no scholarships back then unless you were good in a foreign language, and I simply was not).
うちには大学に行かせてもらえるだけの余裕がありませんでした（当時は外国語の成績が良くないと奨学金がもらえず、私は本当に外国語の成績がよくなかったんです）。
My mother suggested I take a secretarial course so that, perhaps, I could get a job in Africa.
母は私にアフリカで仕事を得られるように秘書コースを取ることを提案しました。
When an old school friend invited me to Kenya for a holiday, I jumped at the chance.
学生時代の古い友人がケニアへ私を招待してくれた時、私はそのチャンスに飛びつきました。
To earn the fare I worked as a waitress, living at home.
渡航費を稼ぐために、自宅で暮らしながらウェイトレスとして働きました。
I was 23 years old when I sailed off, following my dream.(Boats were cheaper than planes in those days.)
夢を追って船出したのは23歳の時でした。（そのころは船の方が飛行機よりも安かったのです。）

I heard that Dr. Louis Leakey might help me to work with animals, and went to see him at the natural history museum.
私はルイス・リーキー博士が動物に関わる仕事ができるように手助けしてくれるかもしれないと聞きました。そこで博士に会いに自然史博物館へ行きました。
He gave me a job as his secretary, but was so impressed by how much I knew about animals (from all my reading) that, eventually, he asked if I would go and study a group of wild chimpanzees.
博士は私に彼の秘書としての仕事をくれましたが、動物についての知識（全部本からの知識）の多さに大変感心していました。ある日ついに博士は私に野生のチンパンジーの一つの群れを研究をしに行く気はあるかとたずねました。
Wow! Not just any animal, but the one most like us!
うゎーっ！ただの動物じゃなくて、人間に一番近いのだ！

And so my message to you is the same as the one my wise mother gave to me―don’t let anyone laugh you out of YOUR dream.
それで、みなさんへのメッセージは賢い母が私にくれたのと同じです―あなたを笑って夢をあきらめさせることを誰かにをさせてはなりません。
But remember, you will have to work hard, look for opportunities, and NEVER GIVE UP.
人にそうさせるのではなく、自分が忘れないことです。 がんばって、チャンスを探し求め、「決してあきらめない」ことを。

But perhaps you do not yet know what you want to do when you leave school.
学校を出る時は自分が何をしたいかおそらくまだ分からないでしょう。
Don’t be in a hurry to decide.
急いで決めないでください。
Just wait quietly, learning about all the different opportunities.
ただ静かに待って、あらゆるチャンスについての情報を集めましょう。
One day you will suddenly become motivated―by attending a lecture, watching a documentary, a chance meeting.
ある日突然みなさんは思い立つことでしょう―講演やドキュメンタリー作品や偶然の出会いがきっかけとなって。
Suddenly you will think: THIS IS IT!
みなさんは突然思うことでしょう。「これだ！」って。

And then, for everyone, there is one last message, one that I think is very important indeed.
ここでみなさんに最後のメッセージがあります。私が本当にとても大切だと思うことです。
This life is about a lot more than just making money.
お金をかせぐことだけが人生ではなく、もっと多くのことがあります。
We need money to live, but we should never live for money.
生きるためにお金は必要ですが、お金のために生きるべきではありません。
Wealth does not necessarily lead to happiness.
富があるからといっては必ずしも幸せになるとは限りません。
What will make you happy is doing something that makes you feel useful so that you feel your life has meaning.
みなさんを幸せにしてくれることは、みなさんが役に立つと思うことをすることです。そうすれば、みなさんは自分の人生に意味があると思えるのです。
So, if you do get wealthy, use your wealth in such a way that you do maximum good.
ですから、みなさんが富を得たら、できるだけ多くの善行にその富を使ってください。
