In 2009, the people of Prague and people all over the world heard the words of Barack Obama, the 44th president of the US.

“So today, I state America’s promise to look for peace in a world without nuclear weapons.
「今日、アメリカが核兵器のない平和な世界を追求することを約束します。
This goal will not be reached quickly.
この目標は、すぐには達成されないでしょう。
It will take patience and persistence.
それには、忍耐と根気が必要になるでしょう。
But we must ignore the voices who tell us that the world cannot change.
しかし、世界は変わらないと私達に言っている声を、私たちは無視しなければいけません。
We have to say, ‘Yes, we can!'”

All who heard this speech cheered and clapped with excitement.

In the same year, Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize.
同じ年、オバマ大統領はノーベル平和賞を受賞しました。
Usually, this prize goes to people who have done something great.
普通、ノーベル平和賞は何か偉大なことをした人に贈られます。
However, his hope for a world without nuclear weapons won him the prize in 2009.
しかし、彼の核兵器のない世界を求める願いが、２００９年にノーベル平和賞を受賞したのです。
